Indirect Questions

Se utilizan para hacer preguntas a personas que no conozco:
  • Do you know . . . ?
  • Do you have any idea . . . . ?
  • Can you tell me . . . . ?
  • Could you tell me . . . . ?
  • I wonder if . . . .

Using indirect questions is more polite. 

En inglés no puede haber dos preguntas dentro de una misma oración.

Examples:
  • What time is it?

Do you know what time it is?
Do you have any idea what time it is?
Can you tell me what time it is?
Could you tell me what time it is?
  • How old are you?

Can you tell me how old you are?
  • What is your name?

Could you tell me what your name is?
  • Where are you from?

Can you tell me where you are from?
  • What is your favorite sport?

Could you tell me what your favorite sport is?

Cuando hay un auxiliar “do” en una oración, este se elimina.

Examples:
  • What do you do?

Can you tell me what you do?
  • How many languages do you speak?

Can you tell me how many languages you speak?
  • Where does she live?

Can you tell me where she lives?
  • How many children does he have?

Can you tell me how many children he has?
  • What time did you get up yesterday?

Can you tell me what time you got up yesterday?
  • Do you speak English?

Can you tell me if you speak English?
I wonder if you speak English.


Nota: Cuando utilizamos “I wonder if” no se requiere de un signo de interrogación al final de la oración y puede utilizarse también con “WH Questions”, por ejemplo:
  • I wonder where he bought his tablet.

Instructions: Convert the sentence from Spanish to English and then transform in indirect question.

  6. ¿Hizo su tarea?
  7. ¿Quiénes son tus amigos?

  9. ¿De qué color son sus ojos?
  10. ¿Qué película viste ayer?
  1. Does he work? INDIRECT QUESTION: I wonder if he works.
  2. Does he have girlfriend? INDIRECT QUESTION: I wonder if he has girlfriend.
  3. Where do they live? INDIRECT QUESTION: Can you tell me where they live?
  4. Did you read the book? INDIRECT QUESTION: I wonder if you read the book
  5. Did you go to the party? INDIRECT QUESTION: I wonder if you went to the party.
  6. Did he do his homework? INDIRECT QUESTION: I wonder if he did his homework.
  7. Who are your friends? INDIRECT QUESTION: Can you tell me who your friends are?
  8. Was he born? / Where did he born? INDIRECT QUESTION: Could you tell me was he born?
  9. What color are her eyes? INDIRECT QUESTION: Can you tell me what color her eyes are?
  10. What movie did you watch yesterday? INDIRECT QUESTION: Can you tell me what movie you watch yesterday?

Wish and if only for regrets Form: Subject + wish + past perfect If only + subject + past perfect Function: We use wish/if only + past perfect to talk about things we would like to change about the past.                                Examples: I wish I had learned to play a musical instrument when I was younger. I wish I had been more adventurous. I definitely wish I hadn´t smoked. If only I had changed careers years ago.                          Watch out!! I wish I hadn´t broken my leg when I was a teenager (Right). I wish I didn´t break my leg when I was a teenager (Wrong). If only I hadn´t left my job (Right). If only a haven´t left my job (Wrong). Practice Complete the second sentence using the words in parentheses so that it means the same as the first. My doctor gave me good advice. I didn´t listen. (Wish). I wish I had listened to my doctor´s advice. Terri wanted to go to college, but she didn´t go (wishes).
